Where Call of Duty fails (and thus gets nominated as one of our ‘must-avoid’ games as a result), Crysis succeeds, or at least, tries really hard to make up for.
When Crysis is not able to best the mega-franchise that Activision continuously boosts its bank balance with, it makes up for it with a stellar level of graphics that no matter how lacking some of its other features may be, the visuals will never fail to make you succumb to its most eye-pleasing asset, having you weak at the knees before you can say ‘holy nanosuit!’.
Imagine my delight then, when Crysis 3 was leaked and subsequently announced formally by EA, keen to add a third outing to the super-soldier sandbox-em-up franchise. This is big, BIG news as Crysis 3 will be the “first blockbuster shooter of 2013”, pipping closest rival Call of Duty to the 2013 line-up top spot, with COD’s 2012 release not even officially revealed yet.
With the first images, first gameplay trailer and a whole host of other info out in the open about the game, this round-up is a good place to board the Crysis 3 hype train.

What’s the Crysis 3 story?
Assuming the role of nano-suited-and-booted lead, ‘Prophet’, once again, our protagonist returns to the Big Apple to find that it’s not quite as juicy (or delicious) as that nickname once suggested, as the corrupt Cell Corporation has confined the city limits in a giant Nanodome. New York has now entirely been taken over by the environment, with the stellar Crysis 3 graphics system now being used to depict “overgrown trees, dense swamplands and raging rivers” in all of their hi-def glory.
Crysis 3 is set in 2047 and navigating this new “treacherous” environment, you must seek revenge for the Cell Corporation’s dome-building brand of evil, with CC misleading the defenceless human population into believing that these city-holding Nanodomes were for ‘the greater good’ and would protect them from the alien forces of the Ceph – in actual fact, these giant domes of doom are being used as a means for Cell Corporation to complete their mission of global domination.
And did I mention that a Ceph invasion is right around the corner? Crysis 3 knows how to pack the heat.
What will the Crysis 3 gameplay be like?
“Crysis 3 is a thrilling mix of sandbox gameplay, advanced combat and hi-tech human and alien weaponry that shooter fans will love,” – Cevat Yerli, Chief Executive Officer of Crytek.
So, that’s the formal word on the Crysis 3 gameplay from the game’s developer, Crytek – though the other, non press-release-y buzzings from around the web support that quote from Yerli but offer more insight.
We know about the weapons in Crysis 3, for one. The enemy will be wielding guns, with the Ceph notably having access to giant mech tripods and flamethrowers, whereas the Cell Corp. soldiers will be utilising shotguns and rifles. Our guy, Prophet, on the other hand, is armed with…a bow and arrow.
No, our Crysis 3 protagonist is not in practice for The Hunger Games, Prophet’s bow and arrow combo is a lot more tech than that – y’know, given that it’s customisable with explosives, scopes, a variety of fire modes and types of ammo that don’t even do damage. Of course there’s the added bonus of your nanosuit powers, of which the three modes – Power, Stealth and Armour – will be available again.
Also, the human forces will be riding around on tanks and jeeps, as well as setting up turrets. Chances are, we’ll be able to have a go on them too.
What will Crysis 3 look like?
Attractive. So attractive that Crysis 3 will make you want to leave your partner and elope with the brand new engine, CryENGINE 3, that developer Crytek built from scratch to power it. Maybe.
In any case, a Crysis 3 gameplay trailer was released earlier (this is the very same reason we held off on posting this until today) showing off the mighty shooter in action.
What is the Crysis 3 Release Date?
EA, publisher of Crysis 3, say ‘early 2013’. However, a leak by online retailer Shop.To suggests that the Crysis 3 release date is February 13, 2013. That’s purely speculation but that’s a date that will have little competition and means that Crysis 3 will be able to keep the confident “First Blockbuster Shooter of 2013” tagline that EA set out for the game in its announcement press release.
