Featuring female protagonist, Aveline de Grandpré, in a series first, Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD makes it way to PS3 and Xbox 360 in January, 2014, after a smallscreen outing on the PS Vita. Previously being a one-platform game and featuring a diverse character who challenges social norms in both her world and ours, Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD is obviously a big deal. You can find out more about the game and its release date after the break.
The Future Is Digital
Representing a (hopefully) better future for diversity in our favourite franchises, Aveline is a woman of colour, being of both French and African heritage. Set in 1765, the same time groups of old, white men (and Connor Kenway, the Native American hero of Assassin’s Creed 3) were fighting it out in Boston over which side – the Colonists or the Loyalists – would get to control America, Aveline was fighting for her freedom and her people in the south.
Spanish forces attempt to take over Louisiana for longstanding franchise nemesis, the Templars, and end up taking on Aveline who, according to Ubisoft, “stands ready to defend her people”. Also going on Ubisoft quotes, they seem rather proud of Aveline’s inclusion in the AC franchise, noting on their site that she is “the first playable female Assassin” (took them long enough, mind). It’s also important to point out that while some criticised Assassin’s Creed Liberation for being PS Vita-only, and therefore having limited appeal, with the HD update, even more players than before will be able to play through the amazo-looking bayou of New Orleans and its accompanying rooftops (and underwater exploration sections) on PS3 and Xbox 360.
Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD – Release Date
Now that you’ve been given a bit of insight on Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD’s world, I suppose you’ll want to know when it’s out. Aveline will be bringing both her Ezio-outdoing sleuthing antics (she dresses up as both a lady and a slave in some missions, showing just how much effort Ubi have gone to making Aveline’s class-swapping a huge, bold point of what the times were like) as well as her impressive arsenal – machete, blowpipe, duelling pistols and all – to PS3 and Xbox 360 early next year.
The Assassin’s’ Creed Liberation HD release date is January 15th, 2014, Ubisoft have confirmed and we’ll keep you updated on the game once we know more.
