Yes we’re intrigued by its cast of characters, yes we’re excited to stab a variety of supernatural beasties in their kneecaps and yes every single one of us is chomping at the bit to lead a variety of creatures and fierce warriors into battle and save the world but what most of us can’t wait for are the Dragon Age: Inquisition romances. Since the absolutely brilliant Dragon Age: Origins landed on the scene and the slight disappointment of Dragon Age 2 came around with its shoddy combat, we’ve loved the romance gameplay that let’s us woo, shack up or make virtual puppy eyes at our AI teammates. Dragon Age is also one of the few series that includes gay or bisexual characters and allows them to get into relationships with the player’s character. With all the support around the mechanic then, it makes sense that BioWare have now released a Dragon Age: Inquisition romance guide which you can read all about below.
*SPOILER FREE* Discussion About the Dragon Age: Inquisition Romance Guide
Don’t worry I’m not a moron, this thing has some serious spoilers, so that link should you dare to follow it could potentially spoil your enjoyment of the game. Click it at your own risk and all that.
According to Dragon Age: Inquisition‘s Lead Designer, Mike Laidlaw, the reason BioWare have chosen to release a list covering every potential in-game romance is to avoid player disappointment once they jump into the game later this year.
“You could play the game for a significant length of time before discovering that a follower isn’t interested. [Players might have] their hearts set on a particular character, only to end up disappointed.”
Laidlaw also says that although the list explains what’s ‘possible’ it doesn’t necessarily mean it will happen without a bit of legwork.
“These characters have their own agendas and opinions, and the choices a player makes during the game have a definite impact on their affections. That’s intentional.”
It’s certainly a swift movement from the slightly grody days when you could just fling a bunch of gifts at the character you had your eye on and make them fall in love with you. Who said chivalry ain’t dead, eh?
Dragon Age, Race and Same-Gender Romances
What that list also tells you is whether the character in question will be open to relationships with male or female player-controlled characters. Some might find that you’re the right gender but the wrong race so if you’re looking forward to sparking a romance with a particular character on Dragon Age: Inquisition‘s roster, that’ll certainly be something to think about before you start a new game.
There’s also the fact that some characters on the “core cast” can’t be romanced whatsoever. Laidlaw adds,
“While we know this may disappoint some fans who were interested in them, we don’t believe that they lose out, as each character engages in their own meaningful story.”
Even if your favourite character won’t be interested in a relationship with your player-character then, there are still a variety of romance options that even Cupid’s cherubic face would grin at. We’ll have more for you on that in the run up to the game’s release.
