When Ninja Theory announced third person action game Hellblade back in August at Gamescom 2014, plenty of people read that would be coming ‘first to PS4’ and raised their eyebrows. Did this mean that Senua’s billowing locks and unsightly foes would be making their way to other platforms at a later date? With their new game, Ninja Theory are testing out a fancy development model called ‘independent triple A’ that lets them make great games on tiny budgets. The team have previously spoken about why PS4 is a fantastic testing ground for that and they have now announced that Hellblade will be coming to PC too.
Hellblade on PC
The reveal was a snippet of an interview published in issue 265 of PC Gamer (and posted by them online here) in which they spoke to Ninja Theory’s creative chief Tameem Antoniades about the game.
Antoniades explained why Hellblade will be coming to PC:
““I think PC offers us a level of freedom that we haven’t had before. We’re looking at everything we do on this project and figuring out better ways of doing things compared to how the traditional AAA console model works. And consoles are following suit with PC, but I think they’re years behind what things like Steam are doing. If we want to do an open beta right now, it’s a little bit trickier to do that than on PC. Playtesting is a huge thing for us. Usability testing, getting people hands-on to try things out, get feedback, then roll that back in and improve the game… it’s always been essential for us to do that. Not every publisher has let us, because of the secrecy that goes into consoles and publisher-based businesses. As an independent we have the freedom to do that.”
But the PC version of the game won’t just be a shiny looking port of the PS4 release, as Ninja Theory are also considering 4K resolutions (the gorgeous, ultra version of HD) and mod support:
“I think we want to get to the point where we can invite players and fans to add to the game, and do things that are unexpected, and suggest ideas or add-ons that can make the game richer.”
It’s always nice for developers to encourage mods rather than hinder them and it could breathe extra life into Hellblade when players are done with its linear story campaign. It would also be interesting to see Ninja Theory offer those mods as (free, obviously) DLC to the PS4 version. Build a community on all platforms and all that.
Ninja Theory’s own blog post about it says that Hellblade will be coming to PC “alongside the previously announced PlayStation 4 version” so hopefully that means the release date will be exactly the same for everybody. Fingers crossed.
Hellblade will be released on PS4 and PC in 2015.
