Right, you’ve heard of Spelunky, haven’t you? In it, you ‘spelunk’ in randomly generated caves and go about hunting for buried treasure, exploring and saving damsels. If that sounds good to you then you’ll most definitely like The Swindle which is a roguelike platformer that its creator Dan Marshall describes as ‘Deus Ex meets Spelunky . In The Swindle you’ll be running and climbing around its procedurally generated levels, darting away from security guards or boffing them on the head as you attempt to steal all the money. Although that premise sounds mighty promising, Dan axed it back in 2011 because it didn’t feel right. Now, it’s back and better than ever and it’s coming to consoles. The Swindle: Coming to PC, PlayStation and Xbox This Year
The Swindle‘s core gameplay is a challenging hybrid between stealth and going around like a lunatic as you try and hack into the place’s systems and make it out alive without dying. You complete levels by escaping the building and making it back to your airship, which is your base where you’ll be able to upgrades your skills and tools in order to take on bigger buildings where there’ll be even more money to steal. The circle of crime and all that…
Things might get a bit trickier because of permadeath. Plenty of roguelikes have permadeath (including the upcoming Kickstarter hit, Children of Morta) but it’s especially menacing in The Swindle as thieves are procedurally generated. Every time you die you lose all of your upgrades and get a new thief so if you grow attached to one, you’ll want to be extra careful to avoid the chop. Also, the thieves will be generated in various races and genders – there’s no word on whether that means we’ll get protagonists outside the gender binary but there’s nothing to stop you from assuming it!
The Swindle will be released on PC, PS4, PS3, PS Vita and Xbox One in 2015.
