When Ubisoft released Child of Light last year, the platforming RPG was a hit in terms of sales and reception. In addition to having a brilliant story (the game follows a young princess named Aurora as she saves her kingdom and grows up along the way), praised was heaped upon the game’s art style as it has gorgeous watercolour graphics thanks to the Ubi Art Framework game engine.
People who bought the deluxe edition of the game received a poster and the official art book but now Ubisoft wants to share Child of Light‘s art style with everybody. So, to celebrate the one year anniversary of the game’s release, Ubisoft has released a digital art book and story that is now available for free. More on that after the break.
Free Child of Light Art Book
The book is just one of the secret Child of Light projects that the game’s creative director, Patrick Plourde, was talking about a few weeks ago. Called Child of Light – Reginald the Great, the book follows a Bolmus (the mouse-like race) named Reginald who wants to go on and adventure to “find his purpose in life” and along the way he meets Roberta and the two go exploring together .
Reginald is the son of Robert, a trader who goes against his race’s anti-adventure stance so that he can prove his love to a Bolmus lady named Margaret, so this is a nice little throwback to those who enjoyed meeting Robert and Margaret in the game.
As for why this art book doesn’t focus on Aurora, in an interview on the Ubisoft Blog the book’s illustrator Serge Meirinho explains that “Aurora is not a child anymore at the end of the game and we wanted children to be able to relate to the main character, so we chose to explore a new child-like character with Reginald”. Meanwhile, Patrick Plourde added that “one thing [he likes] a Child of Light protagonist to have is a love of adventure” and that Reginald “wanting to follow his dreams against the opinion of the majority was something that was really interesting to [him]”.
As mentioned, the Reginald the Great art book is just one of many future Child of Light projects. More art books are on the way and Plourde has previously revealed that he’s working with Brie Code, who was the lead programmer on the game. This art book doesn’t have a lick of code in it so it seems likely that the next Child of Light game, whenever that’s announced, will focus on one of the characters from the books.
