The Swindle is a game that’s been buzzing around for quite some time, but it dropped off the radar when creator Dan Marshall wasn’t quite sure how to make it work. Back in February, Dan revealed that he’d fixed the game and that it would be back, better than ever.
The idea behind The Swindle is that you are are a member of a band of thieves and as such, you’re pretty fond of breaking into buildings and sneaking around. You can then spend your takings on becoming an even better thief and then the cycle continues.
However, it’s not all ski masks and sticking to the shadows as you’ll have to think carefully about your entry and exit strategy. If you don’t manage to leave the building with your loot, or if the guards catch you, you will lose that character and will have to carry on playing the game as someone else. We’ll be able to take part in that high stakes gameplay soon as The Swindle will be released this summer.
The Swindle Release Date
Initially, The Swindle was pencilled in for a vague ‘2015’ release date on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Wii U. Given that we hadn’t heard from the game in months and there were so many different versions of the game, that didn’t instil much confidence in fans. However, Dan Marshall has confirmed that the game is “ostensibly” finished with cutscenes, bad guys, levels and upgrades all complete and that as long as the game passes console certification (where Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo will test the game out for themselves to make sure that it’s not broken), we’ll be able to play it within the next few months.
But there’s still time between now and The Swindle‘s official release and so Dan is also working on a Day One patch “which will bring any minor tweaks to balancing or fix any bugs that crop up between now and then”. Additionally, Michael Firman, who is the game’s illustrator, will be working on new characters and backgrounds.
The Swindle is procedurally generated and if your character dies, the next character you get to play as could be a different race or gender. So, variety is important and it will be good to see what else Michael is able to come up with.
The Swindle will be released in summer 2015 for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Wii U.
