Sony’s E3 2015 press conference was full of wonderful surprises: there was The Last Guardian, Shenmue 3, Hitman, Final Fantasy 7, and that intriguing but baffling new game that Media Molecule announced. But none were quite as exciting as Horizon Zero Dawn, the new PS4 exclusive from Killzone developer Guerrilla Games.
Guerrilla hasn’t worked on anything other than Killzone since 2004 when the first Killzone game was released, but the most recent game, Killzone: Shadow Fall underwhelmed and was criticised as being more of a tech demo than a fun gameplay experience. Hopefully those same flaws don’t carry on to Horizon Zero Dawn then, as if it’s done correctly, the upcoming game could blow everyone out of the water.
Horizon Zero Dawn Announced
According to a press release sent out by Sony after the show, Horizon Zero Dawn stars a hunter named Aloy who lives in “a vibrant and lush world inhabited by mysterious mechanized creatures”. No one knows how those robot dinosaurs got there or what happened to the people who lived in the world before they came along, but as Aloy goes on a “compelling, emotional journey”, she will “unravel mysteries of tribal societies, ancient artifacts and advanced technologies that will determine the fate of this planet, and of life itself”.
The company also says that we can expect lots more of that combat. As many of those robot dinosaurs are “larger and technologically superior” than Horizon Zero Dawn‘s lead, players will have to use Aloy’s knowledge, intelligence, and agility in order to beat them out. That means that we’ll have to constantly be on the look out for glowing weak spots and we’ll have to use the environment (including those stealthy patches of shrubbery) to our advantage.
As the the game’s graphics, Horizon Zero Dawn will feature “stunningly detailed forests, imposing mountains, and atmospheric ruins of a bygone civilization”. Additionally, it will also feature “changing weather systems” and a full day/night cycle, so perhaps Guerrilla will make it so that certain robot dinosaurs only come out as certain times and Aloy can use her hunting smarts to bring them down.
Horizon Zero Dawn will be released on PS4 in 2016.
