In Fallout 3, one of the most talked about features was the ability to recruit Dogmeat. Dogmeat, as his name suggests, was a canine companion who would follow you around fetching ammunition, food, weapons, and various other consumables. He was a (mostly) helpful companion but the biggest problem with Dogmeat is that it was so easy for him to die.
So when Fallout 4 was announced, and its debut trailer showed the player-character being followed around by a dog, players began to have similar fears. Those fears are unwarranted though, as Todd Howard, the game director and executive producer of Fallout 4, has confirmed that the new version of Dogmeat cannot die.

Fallout 4: Dogmeat Cannot Die
The reveal that Fallout 4‘s Dogmeat can’t be killed has been welcomed by many Fallout fans who hate wandering the Wasteland alone. In the new Fallout 4 gameplay trailer that was released by Bethesda at E3 2015, we found out that our character had a spouse and a child who died during the nuclear war, so it would be a shame if we had to deal with the death of Dogmeat too. Plus, this means that we won’t have to spend all of our time in the game worrying that Dogmeat will get himself into trouble.
However, not everybody is convinced that this is a good idea. Having an indestructible pal is obviously a massive bonus given just how tense and sometimes terrifying some of Fallout‘s settings and enemies can be, but some are concerned that Dogmeat’s immortality will make the game too easy. Bethesda has already confirmed that Dogmeat will be able to fetch things for you and that he can also be of some assistance during combat too, but if he can’t die then this could give players an unprecedented (and unfair) advantage over enemies.
There are only a few months to go until Fallout 4 is released, so this likely isn’t the last time that we will hear about Dogmeat. Hopefully Bethesda will shed some more light on the character’s capabilities soon.
Fallout 4 will be released on November 10, 2015 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
