Back in 2013, Dan Marshall (of developer Size Five Games) announced that steampunk stealth game The Swindle would be going on hiatus “indefinitely”. With fans fearing that the game had been cancelled altogether, they messaged Marshall and begged the developer to bring it back. After feeling “touched” by the amount of messages he received, and after doing some extra prototyping work, The Swindle was revived and the developer announced that it would be coming to PC and consoles.
Last month, Marshall revealed that all is going well with the game’s development and that we could expect to play the game this summer, and that there would be a day one patch. And it appears to be right on schedule as Marshall and the game’s publisher, Curve Digital, have now announced The Swindle release date.
The Swindle Release Date (PC, PlayStation and Xbox)
The Swindle is a procedurally generated game that combines the best bits of Spelunky and Deus Ex into one addictive little package. The game tasks you with breaking, entering and hacking funds to steal cash, escape the building and use your ill-gotten gains to fund even more criminal activities. For example, that money can go towards upgrading your skills and abilities such as bombs to get through walls and bugs that continue hacking their systems even after you’ve made your escape – and once you’ve reached the pinnacle of thieving greatness, you can even pull off a heist at Scotland Yard.
Not that The Swindle makes it easy for you though, as its enemies can kill you with just one hit. Should they kill you, you’ll have to play as a brand new, randomly generated character and you lose all of your cash, though you do at least get to keep your upgrades. Marshall explains that he did this as too many games coddle you and don’t provide you with a challenge.
And, if you’re worried that The Swindle will be just another procedurally generated title, Dan Marshall has released this statement, which should soothe your concerns:
“The Swindle is the kind of game that I always wanted to play; one minute you’re sneaking past robot security guards to grab a load of loot and the next you’re being chased by police choppers and drones, desperately trying to avoid capture and an awkward-and-embarrassing death. Procedurally generated adventures are all the rage these days – but there’s nothing with stakes quite as high as The Swindle.”
The Swindle release date is July 28, 2015 on PC, PS3, PS4 and PS Vita and July 31, 2015 on Xbox One. The game will be released on Wii U “shortly after”.
