There’s something incredibly alluring about putting together a crack team of experts and casing a joint for treasure and riches – it’s one of the reasons why Tomb Raider, Uncharted and GTA V(‘s heists) have all done so well. Problem is, in those games, the heists and the treasure hunting play second fiddle to the combat and if you’re interested in making bank, you’ll have to spend most of your time shooting (or kicking) enemies in the face.
Hopefully Renowned Explorers: International Society is a bit more up you street then as while it does feature a good bit of combat, it’s all about choosing the best way to go about your treasure hunting, including your team and their gear. Developer Abbey Games has just announced the Renowned Explorers release date too, so find out more after the break.
Renowned Explorers Release Date Announced
Set in the 19th century, Renowned Explorers lets you “explore the far corners of the world in the age of discovery, outsmart your rivals, campaign for fame”. Its levels are all procedurally generated meaning that one minute you’ll be whisked off to “forgotten cities” or “lost temples”, and in another you’ll be wishing you took your rain mac with you to the “untamed wilderness”.
There’s an awful lot of variety in what you can do to prepare for these treasure hunts, including the use insight, gold, research, and status which you can collect on your adventures and then spend on supplies for your next adventure. You’ll also build a team based on what each member is good at and how they deal with conflict – there are 20 in all and they’re all either fighters, speakers, scientists, or scouts who can fight (ranged, melee, area of effect), speak (cheers, charms and compliments) or scare (insults, taunts, humiliation) them into submission.
As shown in that trailer, Renewed Explorers‘ battles seems to run on a robust little system that could be a real joy to learn how to master. I’m not particularly crazy on the idea of going up against “angry natives” (wolves, smugglers, and your nemesis Rivaleux are some of the other enemies you face) but given that it was the 1800s, at least it’s realistic.
Renowned Explorers: International Society will be released on September 2, 2015 on PC, Mac and Linux via Steam and GOG.com
