Last year, platforming adventure Never Alone took everyone by surprise. The game, which was based on a tale (Kunuuksaayuka) from the Alaska Native people (Iñupiaq) put players in the warm, fur booties of a young girl named Nuna and her animal companion Fox as they had to save their village from a blizzard. It was a beautiful and haunting title and one that I heaped praise upon in my review.
Many people were also fond of the fact that Never Alone stayed true to its source material – it wasn’t some copy and paste attempt at capitalising on Iñupiaq culture, it was actually developed in partnership with them (as Upper One Games) and the publisher, E-Line Media. There are many, many more Iñupiaq stories to tell though, and everyone would love a chance to play more of what Never Alone offers. Good news then, that the Never Alone: Foxtales expansion DLC will be released soon.
Never Alone: Foxtales Announced
The new DLC puts players in a brand new nautical setting and instead of the freezing cold temperatures in the base game, Nuna and Fox will be able to enjoy the Alaskan spring. The duo will be following the tale of the “Two Coastal Brothers” (as told by Willie Panik Goodwin, Sr.) and will have to use their individual skills together to defeat a Big Bad.
This search for Never Alone: Foxtales‘ main antagonist will also see Nuna learn a new skill: the ability to row and steer an umiaq (a sealskin canoe) as her and Fox traverse the coasts, rivers, and lakes of Northern Alaska. Fox will also be able to communicate with the spirits to change underwater currents – which should come in handy as they’ll also be swimming through the sunken remains of a village.
If that doesn’t float your umiaq, though, Never Alone: Foxtales also comes with five new Cultural Insights videos. These videos, which give you a bit more info about the Iñupiaq people and their culture, were some of the best things about the base game as not only do they teach you something but they’re a pleasure to watch as well.
Never Alone: Foxtales will be released on July 28, 2015 on PC, Mac, PS4 and Xbox One. There’s currently no word on whether the DLC will be released on Wii U.
Never Alone on PS3 and PS Vita
The base game will also be coming to PS3 and PS Vita. In a press release, E-Line notes that the game has been featured on over 75 ‘Best of 2014’ lists, it won ‘Game of the Year’ and ‘Most Impactful Game’ at the Games for Change Awards, and it also nabbed a BAFTA earlier this year for ‘Best Debut Game’, so if you’ve not got the game yet then know that you’re in good hands.
As for PS Vita-specific controls, none have been explicitly stated so far, so it doesn’t look like you’ll be using the touchscreen to throw Nuna’s bola anytime soon. It’s also unclear about whether or not Never Alone: Foxtales will be released on PS3 and PS Vita as well, but I have inquired and will update this post once I hear back.
Never Alone will be released on PS4 and PS Vita in autumn 2015.
