Games about cancer are rare and with good reason: they’re incredibly risky. The disease in itself is a scary and taboo but in games there’s the added issue of whether it will be handled correctly. Will the patient be more than their illness? How can it be incorporated in a genuine way? And how will the game avoid being a PSA? These are all questions we asked ourselves when In Between was announced for PC, PS4, Xbox One and mobile platforms earlier this year.
In Between‘s protagonist is the one with cancer; and it’s terminal. The game is described as “tragic” by publisher Headup Games but some clever physics-bending puzzles and some solid platforming gameplay should hopefully keep this one from being a total cry-fest. It’s out later this week and you can find out more (and watch a brand new trailer) after the break.
In Between Release Date + Trailer
As mentioned, In Between straddles the line between fun platforming romp and terrible tale, with Headup adding that:
“In Between is not yet just another game: Close to being a serious game while still maintaining the immersions and excitement of the entertaining side of gaming, In Between will touch the players hearts and test their skills at the same time.”
We’ll be flipping around our lead character’s world, being sure to avoid obstacles such as the classic gaming spike pit and the less traditional ‘glowing red galaxy orb’, as we consider whether death is really the end and whether life or death are opposites or just perspectives.
In Between has won and been nominated for plenty of awards, including the German Video Games Award (which it won earlier this year) and being nominated for the German Design Award 2016, so there are high hopes that the game is as good as many critics are saying it is. Fingers crossed.
In Between will be released on August 21, 2015 on PC, Mac and Linux via Steam. The game will be released on iOS and Android later this year, and on PS4 and Xbox One in 2016.
