When Fallout 4 was announced earlier this year, it was massively exciting. The announcement trailer fed us story breadcrumbs; our character starts off the game with a spouse and a child and soon the entire family is being ushered into the Vault-Tec vault in advance of the bombs. But unfortunately, they don’t manage to get into the vault in time and suddenly there’s a flash and an orange cloud and people watch the explosion, with no time to do anything about it.
Fallout 4‘s protagonist survives somehow, though, and emerges from the vault seemingly unscathed 200 years later. But how did they make it through the explosion alive? Why was our character spared but their spouse and child were killed? These are questions that fans would love the answers to but unfortunately, Bethesda won’t reveal any more Fallout 4 story details before the game launches in November.
Speaking to IGN, Bethesda’s VP of PR and Marketing, Pete Hines explained why they’re keeping quest, character and narrative info under wraps:
“I would be stunned if we said anything else about the story ever again [prior to launch]. We’re going to let everybody experience that in the game as much as possible. But there are certain trade-offs you have to make to build some amount of awareness to what the game is offering, so you’re willing to make some sacrifices.”
Although we may not be getting any more narrative info, Bethesda has been more than happy to show off gameplay. They’ve described the game’s base building system, there will companions for our character to romance, it will have mod support, and they recently revealed that Fallout 4 will not have a level cap or a ‘hard finish’ so we’ll be able to keep exploring once we complete the mysterious story.
Are you disappointed that Bethesda isn’t revealing any more story info? Or are you still excited as ever for Fallout 4? Leave a comment and let us know.
Fallout 4 will be released on November 10, 2015 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
