Instead of just being a fresh lick of paint or just a roster upgrade, NBA 2K16 has plenty to offer fans this year. Developer Visual Concepts added Team Relocation to the game, pick up basketball mode NBA 2K16 Pro-Am has been introduced, and with the help of award-winning director Spike Lee, NBA 2K16 also has a dramatic story, with a movie’s worth of narrative content being included.
On top of this, the game’s publisher 2K offered fans the chance to play NBA 2K16 several days early if they pre-ordered the game and the game’s Michael Jordan Special Edition was sure to pique fans’ interests too. So, it comes of very little surprise that NBA 2K16 has sold 4 million copies in its first week on sale and that it’s also broken a franchise sales record too.
NBA 2K16 Sales Record
2K has revealed that NBA 2K16 ‘sold-in’ 4 million copies worldwide within its first week of availability (September 25 – October 2) . The difference between sold-in and sold to players is that sold-in means that 4 million copies have made it to retailers, and that they aren’t necessarily in the hands of players, but nonetheless this is still impressive.
This figure breaks the NBA 2K record for most copies of a game sold in its debut week, with Jason Argent, senior vice president of basketball operations at 2K, saying that “NBA 2K fans around the world are buying this title faster and in greater numbers than ever before.” In fact, to date, NBA 2K15 has sold about 7 million copies overall so NBA 2K16 is already well on its way to beating that figure.
A strong contributor to this is NBA 2K16‘s digital sales, which 2K says have also doubled in comparison to last year’s basketball sim. Greg Thomas, president of Visual Concepts, also weighed in on NBA 2K16‘s early sales success, saying that:
“Our goal was simple, make NBA 2K16 the most playable, authentic basketball experience ever. The development team demonstrated tremendous dedication to recreating every nuance of the sport both on and off-court, which has been the driving force behind our early success.”
