In December there was the surprise news that EA’s upcoming fighting sim, EA Sports UFC 2, would feature ex-WWE fighter CM Punk. The reveal (which came from a hands-on preview of the game) was a real shock to UFC fans as the former WWE star (real name Phil Brooks) has yet to take part in a single match under the UFC banner.
A gameplay trailer released the following week featured star names such as Conor McGregor and Ronda Rousey but with CM Punk noticeably absent from it, fans were eager to know what he will would like in-game too. Those calls have now been answered as another new EA Sports UFC 2 gameplay trailer shows the new UFC fighter in action.
EA Sports UFC 2‘s CM Punk Controversy
The latest bit of EA Sports UFC 2 footage gives us another look at the game’s new features. With the new knockout physics system, fighters react in “the most realistic way as possible”, there’s now 360 degree head motion (giving players full range of motion when evading attacks), while the grapple and submission system has received an overhaul (and made a lot easier to follow from the looks of it) which is certainly a welcome change from the first game.
On top of all that, CM Punk is in the trailer too, but only just. It doesn’t really give us an idea of what he’ll be like, but MMA Junkie‘s Mike Bohn tweeted that when he played EA Sports UFC 2, CM Punk was rated 85 out of 100. This is remarkably high considering that the fighter is still in training for his (yet undated) UFC debut.
Following backlash about CM Punk’s in-game rating, the EA Sports UFC Twitter account told fans not to get “too excited” about the rumoured ratings as they’re “still finalizing” things. Though, it’s unclear whether this has done anything to calm tempers as some were already voicing their frustrations before the news about his rating broke. With players angry that the fighter is being included in the game at all, CM Punk responded, saying that “not since Samus Aran was revealed to be a woman have dummies been this butt hurt about a video game”.
EA Sports UFC 2 will be released March 15 (North America), March 17 (worldwide) on PS4 and Xbox One.
