When it was released on Xbox One and Xbox 360 last year, Rise of the Tomb Raider was largely praised by critics who called it a huge improvement over predecessor Tomb Raider (2013). Developer Crystal Dynamics has only built on that since, releasing several bits of Rise of the Tomb Raider DLC.
These DLC packs include the Endurance Mode DLC, which sees Lara scavenge and hunt to survive, giving players their toughest challenge yet and there’s also Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch that sees Lara take on the supernatural (complete with some terrifying hallucinations). Closing out the trilogy of major DLC is Cold Darkness Awakened, which launches next week. Find out more after the break.

Rise of the Tomb Raider Cold Darkness Awakened DLC
In a post on the Xbox Wire, Microsoft (the publisher of the Xbox versions of the game) describes Cold Darkness Awakened as follows:
“A decommissioned Cold War research base has been breached, unleashing a deadly affliction from its Siberian slumber. As the illness seeps into the wilderness surrounding the base, Trinity soldiers transform into bloodthirsty killers who thrive on carnage. To prevent the affliction from spreading, Lara must rely on her wits, physical agility, and crafting abilities to overcome this new enemy and shut down the decommissioned base.”
While it sounds like another gruelling challenge for Lara Croft, and although it should provide something much different from the main campaign gameplay, some are disappointed that it essentially boils down to ‘zombie slaughterfest’ which they’ve seen in so many other games.
There’s also the concern that this DLC will be as short as the Baba Yaga add-on. Although the supernatural quest was praised for its originality, some said that they only got half an hour of gameplay out of it, so it’s understandable why fans are worried about Cold Darkness Awakened. The DLC is out next week either separately or as part of the game’s season pass, so we don’t have long to wait to see if those fears were correct.
Rise of the Tomb Raider Cold Darkness Awakened DLC will be released on March 29 on Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC.
