The Ghostbusters movie franchise has a long history of video game tie-ins. In addition to an arcade game and several mobile apps (including augmented reality spin-off Ghostbusters: Paranormal Blast), there have also been several Ghostbusters games across PC, PlayStation and Xbox platforms.
So, with the Ghostbusters movie franchise being rebooted this summer with an all-female cast, it makes sense that the franchise’s popularity would again be cashed in on with yet another video game version. After much rumour and speculation, Activision has finally confirmed that Ghostbusters (the video game) will be released on PC, PS4 and Xbox One in July.

Ghostbusters Video Game Coming to PC, PS4 and Xbox One
In a press release, Activision says that Ghostbusters takes place after the events of the movie and players will take control of a new cast of rookies who “watch over the station while the now-famous Ghostbusters tour the country stopping high-profile poltergeists.” There are male and female rookies to choose from, with Activision adding that “each has his or her own unique personality and play style, bringing special strengths to support the team.”
Gameplay-wise, the new Ghostbusters game offers third-person action with some RPG elements thrown in for good measure. In addition to mowing down ghosts from a top-down view, players will also be able to improve their ghost-busting rookie, levelling up their gear and abilities by “tackling objectives, defeating ghastly creatures and discovering hidden collectibles in Manhattan’s most haunted haunts.”
At this point, with not much gameplay footage to look at, it’s hard to tell whether the upcoming Ghostbusters game will be a fun time-sink or whether it will be terrible like so many other video game tie-ins of movie franchises. We’re happy to give Activision and the (yet to be revealed) developer the benefit of the doubt for now though and we’ll keep you posted once we hear more news about the game.
Ghostbusters will be released on July 15, 2016 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
