In mobile game Marvel Avengers Academy, fans of Marvel’s superheroes (and villains) can play as their favourite character, improving their superpowers in order to combat the forces of evil. The likes of Black Widow, Captain America, Hulk, Nick Fury and more are all featured in the popular iOS and Android game.
The game also hosts regular themed events, with the latest one being called the “British Invasion” as the Black Knight, who has been cursed by the Ebony Blade, begins to ‘tear through’ the United Kingdom. The British Invasion event also introduces a gay superhero to Marvel Avengers Academy. Find out more after the break.
Marvel Avengers Academy’s Gay Superhero
As part of of the British Invasion event, a character called Union Jack was added to the game. Union Jack, who is depicted as super-spy Brian Falsworth in Marvel Avengers Academy, comes out to Black Widow after she says that he’s the first guy at school who hasn’t hit on her. “No offense, but you’re not my type,” says Union Jack and when Black Widow suggests that he likes Enchantress instead, he simply replies “I’m telling you I’m gay.” “I feel like a really bad spy now,” says Black Widow.
In another scene that follows, Loki, who has taken to calling Union Jack “flag man,” asks if the newly added character would like to go for a dance to celebrate their victory. “Sure, mate … I’ll go dancing with you,” agrees Union Jack eventually, in a conversation that has seen many Marvel Avengers Academy players hope that the two characters will get together.
Unfortunately, Marvel Avengers Academy has already removed its first gay superhero. As mentioned, Union Jack was only added to the mobile title for the British Invasion event and according to the game’s official Twitter, if players didn’t free the British spy from Black Knight’s clutches by June 15 then they would be unable to recruit him.
Despite this disappointing news, of course there’s always the possibility that Marvel and the game’s developer TinyCo will add Union Jack (as well as fellow British character Captain Britain) to the game again in future.
TinyCo’s senior narrative designer Allen Warner also told Marvel.com that Marvel Avengers Academy players can expect “lots of other new adventures, rivalries, romances, and surprise cameos” so maybe other gay characters and same-sex romances will be introduced.
