Over the past few weeks, players of Blizzard’s massively popular first-person shooter, Overwatch, have been discussing which character would be added to the game next. As players came up with theories, scouring the in-game maps, going through character voice overs and examining the lore, Blizzard stoked the fire by releasing this teaser image.
As rumours and speculation continued to light up the web, Blizzard has finally confirmed just exactly who the new Overwatch character will be – Ana Amari. Ana Amari is a founding member of Overwatch and she is also Pharah (Fareeha Amari)’s mother. Going by ‘Ana’ in the game, the new hero is set to be a fan favourite and you can find out more after the break.

New Overwatch Character – Ana Amari
A support character, Overwatch’s newest hero wields a Biotic Rifle as her primary weapon, which allows her to fire long-range “darts” and deal damage to enemies or heal allies. Ana’s Biotic Grenade, meanwhile, damages enemies/heals allies caught in its small area of effect. The grenade also offers a “temporary increase” to all healing effects being dealt to allies, while enemies will be unable to receive healing for a few seconds.
Joining these abilities, Ana Amari also has a Sleep Dart in her bag of tricks with her side arm able to knock enemies unconscious. Her ultimate ability is the Nano Boost, which turns allied heroes into super soldiers by giving them increased damage, faster movement and resistance to enemy damage.
While early indications of Ana’s gameplay suggest that she‘s great fun to play as, Overwatch players have also welcomed the new character due to her age. Very few video games feature older women as playable characters, so it’s especially nice to see Ana Amari kicking ass and taking names with no suggestions that her age is a limiting factor.
Moreover, on the Overwatch forum, game director Jeff Kaplan says that Ana Amari’s voice actor is Egyptian and she recorded her lines in Cairo. Some of Ana’s lines are also in Arabic too, which is a fantastic way of acknowledging her heritage.
Ana is now available to play as in the Overwatch PTR on PC. An overall release date for the character has not been revealed.
