Mass Effect: Andromeda will have same-sex romances, creative director Mac Walters has confirmed. The confirmation followed several other Andromeda announcements made to coincide with the annual N7 Day (November 7) event.
Sci-fi RPG Andromeda will be one of several BioWare releases in recent years (including the Dragon Age franchise and the Mass Effect trilogy) to feature LGBTQ characters.

Also yes. And alien kisses for boys and girls as well. https://t.co/sqivOvSdOG

Asked by a fan whether they can “be a dude and kiss a dude,” Walters said “yes, I can confirm that at least.” Another question asking the creative director whether they could “be a girl and kiss a girl” came right after, with Walters saying “yes” and that there are “alien kisses for boys and girls as well.” Walters previously said that Andromeda‘s romance would be ‘organic.’
The news has been met with huge enthusiasm from LGBTQ gamers. Although games are steadily featuring more LGBTQ characters, they are still a rarity and gamers have praised BioWare for consistently representing diversity in its games.
Other big reveals to come out of N7 Day include the above cinematic trailer. The cinematic, which also features our first look at Mass Effect Andromeda‘s male protagonist (we met its female protagonist at E3), explains that players take on the role of the Pathfinder who must find new planets for humans to colonize.
The male and female protagonist (Scott and Sara Ryder) are siblings and their dad Alec Ryder will also feature in the game some, according to the trailer. Moreover, lead designer Ian Frazier says that if you change the look of the player character, it alters the look of Alec and the other Ryder sibling.
In a Game Informer preview, lead designer Ian Frazier also detailed Mass Effect: Andromeda‘s multiplayer. There are “several different types of characters,” and players earn “regular XP” in addition to “prestige XP.” “All the tanky characters, for instance, might be a group that earn prestige XP together” and there’s a “different benefit” for each type of character. A (console-only) multiplayer beta has also been announced, with sign-ups taking place through the BioWare Beacon.
Loyalty missions will be returning in Andromeda too, according to the Game Informer preview. Mac Walters told the publication that this time around, loyalty missions are “much more more optional” and “if you don’t want to engage with them, you don’t have to. If you want engage with them after the critical path is done, you can do that.” There’s no word on how or if loyalty missions will tie in with the game’s romance mechanic, but watch this space.
Mass Effect: Andromeda will be released on PC, PS4 and Xbox One in spring 2017.
