Sundered developer Thunder Lotus Games explains how the game’s level progression is similar to that of Diablo 2. Thunder Lotus also details how Sundered‘s monsters are influenced by Left 4 Dead‘s enemies.
The developer previously revealed how Sundered is like Super Metroid and Rogue Legacy in terms of its replayable Metroidvania gameplay.
Sundered is Influenced by Left 4 Dead, Diablo 2
Writing on the PlayStation Blog, Thunder Lotus’ creative director William Dubé “respectfully” disagrees that Metroidvania games like Sundered cannot be procedurally generated. The developer explains that “every time you die, the physical rooms in the dungeon are re-shuffled” and that the “overall world is set in stone.”
Dubé encourages gamers to “think of it like Diablo 2, where the progression of the levels is always the same, but the individual tiles are always different.” By doing this, Thunder Lotus Games can “make design choices which are core to a Metroidvania experience like backtracking and unlocking new abilities that unlock new regions.”
Sundered is also influenced by Left 4 Dead, says Dubé, as “the monsters spawn based on a number of factors (time, stress level, current region).” This creates “hordes of eldritch horrors that lurk within the shadows, waiting for the player to fall into their trap.”
Some of these ‘eldritch horrors’ can be seen in the latest Sundered trailer. The new video, embedded above, showcases the game’s third region, Eschaton City. The new region looks like it could be tough for (Sundered‘s female protagonist) Eshe to get through but the game also offers ‘Upgrades’ (boost Eshe’s health/melee damage/critical chance stats permanently by spending Shards) and gameplay-changing modifiers called ‘Perks’ to help players get through the trickiest of battles.
There’s also the option of corrupting Abilities and making them more powerful, though as this comes at the expense of Eshe’s humanity and can influence which ending of the game the player gets, players are advised to think carefully before corrupting.
Sundered will be released on PS4 and PC in 2017.
