A new Overwatch comic strip published by Blizzard confirms that Tracer is gay. The Christmas-themed comic strip features Tracer and several other Overwatch characters as they celebrate the holiday and spend time with their loved ones.
The reveal comes just over a month after Blizzard confirmed that it would reveal one of Overwatch‘s LGBT characters ‘soon.’
Overwatch‘s First LGBT Character is Tracer
In the new Overwatch comic strip, titled ‘Reflections,’ fans of Blizzard’s multiplayer shooter can see how the game’s cast of characters celebrate the festive season. Tracer rushes through the city of London to get home and when she arrives, a woman who appears to be her girlfriend thanks Tracer for a Christmas gift before kissing her. Later on in the panel the two women visit Winston’s for Christmas dinner.
Other panels within the comic strip depict McCree asleep in a bar (with Sombra looking on), Pharah having dinner with a man (who is said to be her father) and Mercy reading a letter from home. Reaper, Hanzo, Genji, Symettra, Reinhardt, Torjborn, Ana, Soldier: 76, Widowmaker and several others also feature.
Overwatch players have welcomed the Tracer sexuality reveal with open arms, praising Blizzard for its commitment to having a diverse cast of characters, in terms of gender, sexuality and ethnicity. As fans have been waiting for an LGBT character reveal since before the game even launched, many are also glad that the company has finally made good on its promise.
And, although many were surprised that Tracer – who features prominently on the game’s boxart – is the first Overwatch character to be confirmed as LGBT, that Blizzard decided to make the game’s most well-known character gay has also gotten a thumbs up from fans.
With Blizzard having previously confirmed that ‘multiple’ Overwatch characters identify as L, G, B or T, Tracer is just one of what could be a handful of non-heterosexual or non-cisgendered characters. The game has been positive with representation so far and so we hope that this continues going forward.
