Matthew Mercer, the actor who voices Overwatch character McCree, explains why Tracer being gay is so important. The voice actor also says that he has been “quietly sitting” on the knowledge of Tracer’s sexuality “for awhile.”
Tracer became Overwatch‘s first (official) LGBT character earlier this month when developer Blizzard released a comic in which she kisses her girlfriend.
Overwatch McCree on Tracer Being Gay
@BartFernsy Representation that isn’t overt, or the basis of the character, in media is rare. It’s just welcome.

After one fan tweeted that the reveal of Tracer’s sexuality is “not that edgy” as it’s 2016, Mercer replied that it’s “not edgy, but [it’s] welcome.” Replying to another user who asked why it’s a “big deal,” the voice actor further explained that “representation that isn’t overt, or the basis of the character, in media is rare,” again adding that “it’s welcome.”
Like Mercer, many fans have voiced their support for the way Blizzard that handled the reveal, noting that Tracer doesn’t feel like a ‘token gay character.’ Many are glad that there’s more to the Overwatch character than just the fact that she’s a lesbian and that her sexuality is not her defining characteristic.
However, there are concerns that as Blizzard decided to reveal that she’s gay in a comic rather than in the game itself (a decision possibly influenced by Russia’s gay propaganda law) it will allow those against Tracer being gay to dismiss her sexuality.

Others though, have said that putting the Tracer sexuality reveal into the game itself would have been “pandering.” On Twitter, one Overwatch fan said that they were glad that Blizzard chose not to do this, suggesting that if McCree was gay, Blizzard could pander to fans by adding a voice line that says “it’s high noon and also I like men.”
When another fan joked that they would pay Mercer $50 to record the voice line, Mercer liked the tweet, with many taking it as a show of support for the suggestion that McCree is gay. McCree’s sexuality has been of much debate amongst Overwatch fans, with many imagining that the cowboy character is in a romantic relationship with another male character, Hanzo (McHanzo).
If McCree is gay, it seems unlikely that Blizzard will confirm this (via in-game voice line or via other methods) any time soon. Though, as the company have confirmed that there are multiple LGBT Overwatch characters, it is still possible that McCree is gay and so fans should watch this space.
