Mafia 3 has shipped five million copies, publisher Take-Two confirms. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick also confirmed that development costs for the game, an open-world sandbox with a biracial protagonist, were “higher” than forecast.
Previously, Take-Two revealed that Mafia 3 is 2K’s fastest selling game ever despite getting mixed reviews from fans and critics.
Mafia 3 Has Shipped 5 Million Copies
Speaking during Take-Two’s latest financial briefing (via Seeking Alpha), in which the company discussed its Q3 earnings, Zelnick said that “to-date, Mafia 3 has sold-in approximately five million units.” Zelnick noted that the Hangar 13 developed game “received critical praise for its deep storytelling and authentic period setting” and was “a popular choice for consumers during the holiday season.”
However, Take-Two CFO Lainie Goldstein also noted that development costs for the game, which has been praised for the way it tackles racism in the deep south, were “higher” than the company had forecast. Unfortunately, Goldstein didn’t elaborate much more on that.
Although Mafia 3 has obviously performed well in terms of sales, it’s unclear whether the game will get a sequel. Lincoln Clay’s story of getting revenge on the Italian mob hit the right notes, but it’s not clear whether a new game would follow the character or be set in the same setting (it’s set in the 1960s, in New Bordeaux, a version of New Orleans.)
The future of the series – and of the universe that Hangar 13 has created will likely hinge on whether Take-Two’s forecasts for a sequel are low enough that the company can still get a strong return on its investment. The performance of the recently announced Mafia 3 DLC will likely be a huge determining factor too.
Three pieces of DLC will be released between now and July and all will be story focused. Faster, Baby! which launches at the end of March, sees Lincoln team up with “sister in arms” Roxy Laveau as they take down a corrupt sheriff who has been “terrorizing” civil rights activists. Though, prices for this, and the other pieces of DLC, have yet to be announced.
