Horizon Zero Dawn sales could top 8 million copies according to analysts. Analysts at research firm SuperData Research suggest that Guerrilla Games upcoming, female-led RPG could sell as much as Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.
Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the most highly anticipated games with female protagonists of 2017 as gamers have only become more interested in the title with each passing gameplay trailer.
Horizon Zero Dawn Sales Set to Impress
According to SuperData (via MCVUK), Horizon Zero Dawn sales could hit between 4 and 6 million copies sold in 2017 as a result of its launch early in the year. The game, which features giant robot dinosaurs, could even hit 6-8 million copies sold during its lifetime which would put it in the ballpark of blockbuster video game sequels Uncharted 4 and MGS 5.
SuperData CEO Joost van Dreunen seems to chalk this down to the recent wave of positive Horizon Zero Dawn reviews. The executive says that “The first wave of opinions by industry reviewers on Guerrilla Games’ new title, Horizon Zero Dawn, suggest that it will be a favourite among consumers.”
Superdata’s CEO also explains that “Initial positive reviews of Horizon Zero Dawn are promising for the Sony empire,” suggesting that the release of Horizon Zero Dawn is a “strong strategic move from Sony as competitors move in” and that the game could have a significant impact on PS4 hardware sales. “The release of the game as a platform exclusive suggests that this gap [between PS4 and Xbox One sales] will only widen as consumers flock to play Horizon Zero Dawn.”
But while strong Horizon Zero Dawn sales are good news for Sony’s accountants, the game could also have a big impact on the games industry as a whole. It will show clearly that games with female leads can be massive, system sellers and that developers shouldn’t automatically rule out putting a women at the helm for fear of the game not selling.
Admittedly, Guerrilla did not give Horizon Zero Dawn a female protagonist as a ‘selling point’ but Aloy’s inclusion was always set to be a factor in whether some gamers took a keen interest in the game or purposefully ignored it. Even Sony was worried about Horizon Zero Dawn‘s female lead, but hopefully positive sales will encourage more teams to ignore the misconception it can be detrimental to sales.
Horizon Zero Dawn will be released on PS4 on February 28 (North America) / March 1 (Europe).
