Horizon Zero Dawn is Sony’s biggest launch of a PS4 franchise. The PS4 exclusive, which is an open-world RPG with robot dinosaurs, topped the UK sales charts, even beating several Nintendo Switch launch titles.
Recently, games industry analysts suggested that Horizon Zero Dawn sales could top eight million alone during its lifetime.
Horizon Zero Dawn Sets PS4 Launch Record
Horizon Zero Dawn sold so well in the UK that it is now the biggest launch of a PS4 IP (a new game that isn’t based on an existing game property) in the region. It takes the title of No Man’s Sky which launched on PS4 (and PC) much criticism last summer and it is also the biggest PS4 game launch since Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
The Guerrilla Games RPG, which stars a female protagonist named Aloy, came out on top of the UK games sales charts, beating Nintendo Switch launch title The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild which came in second. It also beat sales chart stalwart Grand Theft Auto 5 (third place), Switch party game 1-2 Switch (fourth place) and Ubisoft’s new fighting RPG, For Honor (fifth place).
Sony has sold over two million PS4s in the UK, so as Eurogamer notes, it’s no surprise that Horizon Zero Dawn was able to do so well. Even though the new Zelda title is available on two consoles (both the Switch and the Wii U), neither console has as many players as those on PS4 and so even with strong competition, it was always more likely that the PS4 exclusive would be number one.
Nonetheless, the strong performance of the game is something to applaud. Sony was once worried about Horizon Zero Dawn because of its female lead character but its initial chart-topping sales indicate that the company should have had faith in the game all along.
It will also be interesting to see whether the performance of the new game influences future Sony decisions and whether more female-fronted PS4 exclusives could be on the way. For now though, Sony and Guerrilla Games will be popping corks in celebration.
