Fairytale parody game Your Royal Gayness kicks off its Kickstarter campaign. The game features a gay prince who must turn down princess’ hands in marriage all while trying to make sure that he does not raise suspicion and reveal his sexuality.
In development by Finnish developer Lizard Hazard Games, Your Royal Gayness aims to highlight the “absurd situations sexual minorities have to face in their daily life through humor.”
Introducing: Fairytale Parody Game Your Royal Gayness
Looking for $5,500 on Kickstarter (just under half of that has been raised with 21 days to go), Your Royal Gayness is all about a gay prince named Amir who is in charge of the Kingdom while his parents are away. Described as a “story-driven resource management” game, players have to make big decisions about the Kingdom, consult with their advisors, take part in special story events and fend off proposals from princesses.
A diverse array of princesses may be put forward to marry Amir (some may even propose to the prince themselves) and players must turn them down, taking into account the princess’ likes and dislikes in order to come up with a convincing reason. If players can’t think of a winning excuse then the suspicion meter will go up and players will have to “convince everyone that you really actually like girls but just haven’t found the right one yet!”
Amir may well find himself lucky in love, though, as a romance mechanic is also being planned. In an email, the game’s project lead Salli Loikkanen tells me that although the details are still being worked out “the basic idea is the same as in the whole game: you get randomized events, which you can react to and make choices.”
“The prince’s personality, likes and dislikes will affect what kind of choices you need to make if you wish to woo him,” says Loikkanen. A system in which you need to figure out which of the potential love interests are gay is also being worked on, as the “basic idea is to portray the difficulties of finding a partner when you’re gay; and especially when you’re closeted.”
Your Royal Gayness is aiming for an August 2017 release date on Windows PC, Mac and Linux.
