Deep Silver Volition announces the release date for its open-world shooter, Agents of Mayhem. The game, which is being made by the team behind the Saints Row franchise, also gets a brand new trailer.
Volition announced Agents of Mayhem ahead of E3 2016, promising a ridiculous, action-packed caper about a group of unlikely protagonists that must take down supervillains.
Agents of Mayhem Release Date, New Trailer Revealed
Volitions confirm that Agents of Mayhem will be released on Windows PC, PS4 and Xbox One on August 15. The game will offer 12 playable characters which can be taken out into the field in groups of three, as players combine their skills and abilities and head to Seoul, South Korea to take down supervillain organisation L.E.G.I.O.N.
Some of this gameplay can be seen in the latest Agents of Mayhem trailer, above. Several of the playable dozen, which includes several female characters and characters of colour, can be seen as they blast enemies and even put down boomboxes as distractions.
However, while that bombastic trailer offers plenty of Saints Row charm, in practice Agents of Mayhem reportedly does not. According to several previews for the game which were published today, the game lacks the same silly humor and charisma than Volition’s other franchise.
Those 12 protagonists (who are more like anti-heroes, apparently) though diverse in the vein of Overwatch, are nowhere near as likeable as the characters in the Blizzard shooter. Shooting also feels dated say some previews, making it clear that Volition hasn’t addressed the issues raised by fans not long after the game was first announced last year.
Given that the quality of the shooting and the chemistry of its characters are the two biggest selling points of Agents of Mayhem, it’s disappointing to learn that game isn’t quite coming together on those fronts, yet. Volition still has a few months to tweak the single player game before its August release date but whether that will be enough to fix those problems is unclear.
