Battle Princess Madelyn is a game that busts both genre tropes as well as supernatural enemies. The indie game features a young female protagonist and is inspired by the developer’s daughter as well as the classic platformer Ghosts ‘N Goblins.
Developer Causal Bit Games also reveals that it has received messages from fans thanking the team for creating the game.
Battle Princess Madelyn Devs ‘Completely Blown Away’ by the Support from Fans
An old school platformer, Battle Princess Madelyn stars the titular Madelyn (and her “ghostly” pet dog Fritzy) as she “battles through graveyards, swamps, castles, countryside and more” in an effort to save the kingdom and her family from an evil wizard. As explained by Causal Bit in the game’s Kickstarter trailer (above), while the game takes a look of cues from the Ghosts ‘N Goblins and Wonder Boy era of platforming games, it’s also directly influenced by the real-life Madelyn herself.
After playing Ghost ‘N Goblins, Maddi told her father that she wanted to be in the game and after he said that they could make a new game to make that happen she said “girls can’t be knights, Daddy. Only boys!” Creative director (and Maddi’s dad) Chris Obritsch scoffed at that and just asked what colour armour she would like, and in an email he says that although this conversation was a “starting point” for him and the game, “to me she can always be whatever she wants to be.”
Obritsch also says that the Causal Bit team gets “private messages thanking us for creating, talking about the game and sharing the story of how it began.” Although the team is “very happy that the game has so much meaning for people,” the developers “never realized it would have this sort of impact on people” either.
In fact, Causal Bit also can’t believe the huge support the Battle Princess Madelyn Kickstarter has garnered either. Initially setting out to raise CA$60,000, as of the time of writing, the current total sits at just over huge CA$170, 000 and the team is “completely blown away by the love and support our game.” Maddi herself is also “very thrilled that people want to play her game,” says her dad, “[and she is] very excited to see the dolls made of her for the game” too.
Battle Princess Madelyn is in development for PC, PS4, Xbox One, Wii U and the Nintendo Switch and will be released next year. A PS Vita version has also been unlocked as a stretch goal.
