The upcoming title is developed by Pillow Fight Games which focuses on making inclusive games for marginalised gamers.
Ghosts of Miami is Destined to Be Your Next Favourite Game
In Ghosts of Miami, players are Conseulo “Chelo” Martinez, a woman who is adept at finding “people who slip through the cracks.” Inspired by “games starring girls who solve mysteries,” it follows Chelo over her first five cases as a private investigator as she puts her sleuthing skills to the test and makes some big decisions on how to solve the mysteries.
Don’t let the bright, bold and downright brilliant visuals fool you though, as despite its neon veneer Ghosts of Miami isn’t afraid of tackling tough subjects. Over the course of those cases, Chelo will face the issues of the time including undocumented immigrants, the AIDs epidemic, drug cartels and murder.
Speaking to me in an email, Pillow Fight owner and producer Jo Fu explains that this juxtaposition was done on purpose, “Miami is a fascinating and complicated place” and the “wonderful” work by artists Cassandra Freire and Iasmin Omar Ata “refocused my writing so we could see Miami as an epicenter of how America was changing, in good and bad ways.” Fu also adds that “We didn’t want to portray just the dark parts, but the bright and vibrant ones too.”
The developer explains that the Ghosts of Miami team has tried to be “true to history,” and sees its female lead ‘react’ to “external forces” (e.g “this neighborhood is safe for her, and that one isn’t”) and struggles, including gang violence, race riots and attitudes towards the police. But on the other hand, Chelo can also get sidetracked and get involved in five different romantic plots.
Five love interests are available to Ghost of Miami players; three women and two men, all with distinctly different styles. Fu says that “Miami was an amazingly diverse place, and I wanted Chelo’s romantic options to reflect that.” These five potential partners include Janet Lessig, a professional drag king who rocks a suit like no one else and Ethan Brown, an EMT who loves his mother.
Chelo “has to step into their different worlds and understand each one before they can smooch,” reveals Fu, who also promises that each love interest “can help Chelo in her investigations, so they had to be fully fleshed-out characters in the story first.”
Ghosts of Miami will be released in summer 2017 on Windows PC, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android. The game was recently Greenlit on Steam.
