Ubisoft announces Far Cry 5 and confirms that the game will have a female protagonist option. The character creator allows players to pick the gender of their protagonist and more, marking the first time that the game has had a lead female character or a non-default protagonist.
Far Cry 5 becomes one of several blockbuster games that allow players to assume the roles of female protagonists with Call of Duty: WW2, Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy all starring female leads.
Far Cry 5 Female Protagonist Option Confirmed
Far Cry 5 will focus on a “fanatical doomsday cult” that has taken over the fictional small-town location of Hope County, Montana. Led by a man called Joseph Seed and his “devoted” siblings, the Project at Eden Seed truly believes the world is going to end and is aiming to ‘save’ all of the ‘sinners’ before that day comes.
A junior Deputy Sheriff who is new in town, the player character will be a force in the resistance, working to take the place back. What’s interesting is that the Far Cry 5 player character won’t be a ‘default’ character and instead be customised in the character creation system.
Ubisoft has yet to show off this character creation system but has confirmed that players can customise their gender, meaning that Far Cry 5 has a female protagonist option, which is a first for the series. Players can also choose their character’s look and their ethnicity.
Other confirmed Far Cry 5 features include the “largest customisable weapon and vehicle roster ever in a Far Cry game,” the ability to recruit NPCs to aid you and an open-world that will take the player by mountains and rivers, encountering plenty of wildlife as they go. And speaking of wildlife, Ubisoft has also stated that Far Cry 5 players will get to have a dog that can accompany them on their adventures too.
A canine companion and a female protagonist sound like back of the box selling points to me but cults are serious business and I’m not the only one a little concerned about Ubisoft’s handling of the topic. Far Cry 5 is sure to make an appearance during E3 2017, though, so expect more news then.
Far Cry 5 will be released on February 27, 2018 on Windows PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
