Ninja Theory announces the PC and PS4 release date for Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. The game, which is an action adventure title set in a Celtic and Norse-inspired underworld, also receives a new trailer to celebrate the announcement.
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is one of 20 games with female protagonists that we are looking forward to this year.
Hellblade Release Date is August 8 on Windows PC and PS4
Ninja Theory confirms that Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice will be released on August 8 for Windows PC and PS4. The game will be a digital-only release and will cost $29.99/€29.99/£24.99 .
Pre-orders for the game have gone live on both platforms, with those who pre-order on PS4 unlocking an “exclusive” Hellblade dynamic theme that depicts the “iconic” burning tree scene (an image of said scene is embedded below). Meanwhile, those who pre-order on PC will get an “exclusive” digital comic short created by Ninja Theory in collaboration with Valiant Entertainment.
As the trailer makes quite clear, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is one macabre game. The game’s female lead is a hardened battle warrior and suffers from psychosis which includes hallucinations and hearing voices too. Some of her mental illness manifests in the humungous, beastly enemies that she must fight throughout the game.
There are also plenty of horrific scenes too. Previous teasers and trailers for the game have hinted at walls of grabby, tar-like hands that try and hold onto Senua, and one video that introduced the female protagonist also showed her carrying a burlap sack with a breathing head in it. Seriously nightmarish stuff.
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is a fairly ambitious game and when Ninja Theory announced it all the way back in 2014, it said that it hoped to set a standard for triple-A indie games. The developer has worked with outside consultants (regarding Senua’s mental health) and has had some technical support from Epic Games, but for the most part it’s going it alone. Whether or not the developer has managed to pull it off will be seen later this summer.
