Bethesda announces Dishonored: Death of the Outsider during its E3 2017 press conference. Standalone DLC within the Dishonored universe, Death of the Outsider will make Billie Lurk/Meagan Foster a playable character.
Foster becomes the second playable female character in the Dishonored series, with Dishonored 2 starring female protagonist Emily Kaldwin.
Dishonored: Death of the Outsider Offers Arkane’s Third Queer Female Protagonist in a Row
In Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, players assume the role of Meagan Foster (also known as Billie Lurk), the captain of the Dreadful Wale. Meagan Foster was once a “notorious killer-for-hire” and now she is teaming up with her mentor Daud to “explore the dark underbelly” of Karnaca and to assassinate the Outsider.
The DLC is available separately from Dishonored 2 (meaning you can play it even if you don’t own that game) and includes new powers and new enemies for Meagan to try them out on. The new female lead will head to underground fight clubs to take on the Sisters of the Oracular Order, the “immortal Envisioned,” Outsider-obsessed group the Eyeless gang and new Clockwork Soldiers.
Dishonored: Death of the Outsider is great news as fans have been asking for Meagan Foster related DLC ever since the character was first introduced last November. But it’s also great news for those looking for better representation in its games.
Dishonored 2 features gay and bisexual characters in prominent positions – and Meagan Foster is one of them. The black, bisexual woman actually becomes the third queer female protagonist in a row from developer Arkane Studios. Dishonored 2‘s Emily Kaldwin has dated people of various genders (her current love interest is believed to be non-binary), while Arkane’s most recently game release, Prey, stars a non-white female protagonist who has an ex-girlfriend.
Positive representations of LGBTQ characters as well as queer female characters that aren’t just for the male gaze are a real rarity, which is why it’s so nice to see that with Arkane’s games. It’s also little surprise that the Dishonored fanbase is full of LGBTQ identified women who are incredibly enthusiastic about its characters too.
Dishonored: Death of the Outsider will released on September 15 on Windows PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
