At E3 2017, Mass Effect and Dragon Age developer BioWare announces a new IP called Anthem. The developer has revealed the first Anthem gameplay trailer, also confirming that playable female characters will be available in the game too.
BioWare’s last release Mass Effect: Andromeda, had its fair share of controversy, but fans are hoping that Anthem will restore the developer’s run of good form.
BioWare’s Anthem Has Playable Female Characters
Anthem is described by BioWare as a “shared world action RPG” where players are Freelancers who leave civilization behind to “explore a landscape of primeval beauty, and confront the dangers you find.” A gameplay trailer shows a a few of these Freelancers teaming up to take on Anthem‘s wild world.
All of the staples of a good RPG are there such as awe-inspiring exploration as the player whizzes around with a jet pack, seamlessly diving underwater and through huge bits of landscape. There’s a pretty rich-looking combat system as players can take out enemies using the different capabilities or upgrades held by their suits, from mortars, to lock-on missiles and good ol’ fashioned assault rifles. Anthem’s collectible loot will also impact that quite a bit, from the looks of it
The customization doesn’t just end at combat, though as Anthem also looks to have a customizable player character. Anthem will have playable female characters, if this gameplay trailer is to be believed. The range of Anthem‘s character customization, including whether or not we’ll be able to create non-white characters, is unclear. But judging from BioWare’s track record it seems likely that it will have a deep customization system.
BioWare and publisher EA are just now ramping up the marketing cycle for the game and there is still a long way to go until Anthem is released. In future, the companies will no doubt offer a look at fights with the game’s bigger enemies (such as the one the player avoids at the beginning) and the Shaper Storm that the four-player squad jumps into at the end of the exciting new trailer.
Anthem will be released in autumn 2018. It has only been confirmed for Xbox One so far, but Windows PC and PS4 releases are expected.
