Crackdown 3 will finally introduce playable female characters, an E3 2017 gameplay trailer for the game confirms. Crackdown fans have been waiting for female characters to be added to the franchise for an entire decade.
Crackdown 3 Playable Female Characters Confirmed
In an explosive new Crackdown 3 gameplay trailer featuring a cameo from Terry Crews, fans can see some of the hijinks that they’ll get up to in the open-world title. Players can use assault rifles, rocket launchers and melee attacks to take out enemies, as well as throwing rocks and vehicles. It will also allow people to destroy buildings; and they can do all of this as a female character.
The trailer doesn’t feature an in-depth look at Crackdown 3‘s character customization options but in the screenshot at the top of this post, you can see a few different variations. There are three black male characters with different hairstyles and one white female character option too. Presumably the full game will offer more than just one male/female preset whose hair and ethnicity you can change.
Looking at how many upcoming games this year have playable female characters (Star Wars Battlefront 2, Call of Duty: WW2 and Destiny 2 just to name a few), Crackdown 3 isn’t exactly breaking ground. But fans are still very happy with the confirmation as they’ve spent years asking for female protagonists to be added to the game.
Billy Thomson, the creative director of 2007 release Crackdown explained that adding playable women would have required a “massive reduction” to other parts of the game. 2010 follow-up Crackdown 2 left out women for a similar reason, as the decision to include co-op (which allowed players to be a different character) meant that the developer just ran out of memory.
It’s disappointing that female avatars couldn’t be Agents before now but better late than never. Fingers crossed we’ll get a look at the customization suite soon.
Crackdown 3 will be released on November 7 on Windows PC and Xbox One.
