At E3 2017, Ubisoft revealed a brand new trailer for Beyond Good and Evil 2. Promising a multi-ethnic world full of all kinds of people, including many women of colour, the big question from fans was whether they would be able to go through the game as a playable female character.
Beyond Good and Evil 2 was far from the only game at the event which showed women of colour in key roles. Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy both promise non-white female protagonists.
Beyond Good and Evil 2 Female Character Option
Ubisoft has been demoing the game behind closed doors and during a preview session with the Ubiblog, creator Michel Ancel confirmed that Beyond Good and Evil 2 will have a playable female character option. Characters will be able to customize their characters, Ancel confirmed, including whether they will play the game as a man or a woman.
With development on the game still ongoing, the Beyond Good and Evil 2 character customization feature has yet to be shown off just yet. Presumably players can create women like Shani (the rad female pirate in the trailer) as well as the incredibly diverse cast of characters shown in the concept art above.
In a developer diary Beyond Good and Evil 2‘s senior producer Guillaume Brunier explains that “You start the game at the very low end of the social scale as a pirate.” Players will have no crew or ship but they may get a small space tuk-tuk.
Elsewhere in that same video, the Beyond Good and Evil 2 team also reveals that the game tackles things such as slavery. Two leading powers of the old world, China and India, have created slavery forces out of human/animal hybrids like Knox (the monkey in the trailer). In a clear allegory for racism and discrimination of all kinds as we know it now, hybrid slaves are not allowed into the temples they built, that feature effigies of gods that look just like them.
But amongst the pirates, they do not care whether you are a hybrid or about your social standing. These things are not important to them. “Pirates accept anyone who wants to be part of their crew,” says Ancel, and we look forward to forming an inclusive pirate crew when the game is released.
Beyond Good and Evil 2 does not yet have a release date and platforms have not been confirmed.
