Assassin’s Creed Origins will feature an intriguing mechanic that makes the most of its Egyptian setting. Player character Bayek may experience hallucinations as he explores the game world.
The ‘overheating’ feature is one of several significant changes to the the franchise, as Assassin’s Creed Origins lets players climb anywhere too.
Assassin’s Creed Origins ‘Overheat’ Feature is (Literally) a Game-Changer
Speaking to the PlayStation Blog, Assassin’s Creed Origins creative director Jean Guesdon reveals that players “don’t have to pay attention to your level of hydration” and won’t need to make Bayek take a drink, either. However, “you will experience a bit of hallucination, because of the heat.”
The Assassin’s Creed Origins team calls this the “desert overheat” feature and says that it will “make things appear.” Although Guesdon doesn’t disclose exactly how these hallucinations may play out, the developer does say that it’s “interesting to go there,” suggesting that players could be in for a wild, game-changing ride.
The desert overheat feature could potentially have significant tactical implications. For example, if players are escaping from enemies through the desert could they find themselves in danger if they suddenly start hallucinating? And could it impact battles and the way that players take on quest missions, having to make sure Bayek doesn’t spend too much time in the sun?
Assassin’s Creed Origins is already boasts many action RPG gameplay features, including levels, abilities and loot, which will see players think carefully about how they approach certain situations. The overheat feature would be just another layer to that.
The mechanic also feeds in to the development team’s goal of being authentic. Origins‘ will include the entire country of Egypt and will include many famous landmarks (such as the Library of Alexandria) and various bits of landscape (including rivers, lakes and pyramids) too. Some liberties will be taken since this is a game and Ubisoft needs to make it fun, but the decision to strive for realism could well pay off.
Assassin’s Creed Origins will be released on October 27 for Windows PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
