Horizon Zero Dawn developer Guerrilla Games reveals why the PS4 exclusive does not feature romance. Many NPCs, both male and female, seem to be romantically interested in female protagonist Aloy but the feeling never seems to be mutual.
Horizon Zero Dawn became the biggest PS4 franchise launch so far when it released on the console earlier this year.
Could Romance Feature in Horizon Zero Dawn 2?
Speaking in a PlayStation Live interview at E3 2017, Guerrilla Games managing director Hermen Hulst explains exactly why Horizon Zero Dawn doesn’t feature any romance for Aloy. Hulst says that “Aloy is very driven. She was born an outcast and she is a woman on a mission. She really was not gonna waste her time in this game.”
However, Hulst says that he has “heard that request [for romance]. People are interested for her to explore her romantic interests [but] it’s not something she particularly had a lot of time for in Horizon Zero Dawn.” The hosts also point out that one of the reasons why people both in the game and out like Aloy so much is that she is fiercely independent.
Of course, many will point out that all of Hulst’s answers are given in the past tense. Sure, Aloy didn’t previously have time for romance and pursuing love interests in Horizon Zero Dawn, but what about in the game’s sequel?
Guerrilla has not officially announced Horizon Zero Dawn 2 and it is currently developing the first piece of Horizon Zero Dawn DLC. But in the same interview with PlayStation Live, Hulst does seem to suggest that Guerrilla would like to spend much more time in the Horizon Zero Dawn universe, even past The Frozen Wilds DLC.
Many fans have called for a Horizon Zero Dawn sequel and given that the first game has sold so well and is critically acclaimed, Guerrilla has every reason to make a follow up. But what that sequel might include and whether Aloy would find love in that game is unclear for now.
