Blizzard confirms the Doomfist release date in a new Overwatch video. The developer revealed Doomfist earlier this month following months of teasing, unveiling the character’s mobile abilities and his penchant for punching things.
Doomfist has also drawn comparisons to Beyonce, as Overwatch fans quickly voice their appreciation for the character and the inspiration behind him.
Doomfist Release Date is July 27
In a new video previewing the hero, Blizzard reveals that Doomfist will be released to everybody on July 27. Although the character has been in testing on the Overwatch PTR (Public Test Region) on PC for a little while now, he will be available to all PC players as well as those playing on PS4 and Xbox One later this month.
Alongside the character, a whole host of cosmetics will be available to unlock too, including a variety of skins based on Doomfist’s Nigerian heritage to a spray that has him arm wrestling with Zarya. A golden Doomfist weapon can also be unlocked if players with enough competitive points really want to punch opponents into paste in style.
However, Doomfist’s release comes with one caveat, namely the fact that the distance of his Rocket Punch has been reduced by 20%. The nerf isn’t so huge but it’s not nothing either.
Tweaks to character’s power are totally necessary for the health of the game and for keeping Overwatch feeling balanced and fair. Another Doomfist change – altering his abilities so that he can’t ‘Superman’ fly across the map – makes sense. But fans are concerned that it’s far too soon for the character to be weakened as the majority have yet to test him.
This is especially the case given that Doomfist seems to have so many counters. Mei counters Doomfist as the freezing from her primary weapon removes his mobility which is a key strength, Pharah can avoid his attacks simply by going airborne, and Sombra’s hacks leave him with his underpowered shotgun primary weapon.
Right now, it seems like the only character that doesn’t counter him is Reinhardt as Doomfist can stop his charges and punch through his shield. Hopefully other, more effective Doomfist strategies will become apparent once the character is available to all, so fingers crossed.
