Microsoft announces that Crackdown 3 has been delayed to spring 2018. The upcoming Xbox One and Windows PC game, which offers an action-packed open-world environment, had been schedule to release later this year.
Crackdown 3 Delayed Over Quality Concerns
Crackdown 3 is being delayed until spring 2018, Microsoft confirms. In a statement to Polygon, Microsoft Studios Publishing general manager Shannon Loftis said that although “it’s a difficult call to move the release date,” the move had been done to make sure that developers Reagent Games, Sumo Digital, and Cloudgine are able to “deliver the right game, with the right quality, and at the right time.”
Loftis called Crackdown 3 a “hugely ambitious game,” referencing its single-player campaign and its co-operative and competitive multiplayer modes. The Microsoft executive added that “Crackdown 3 is an incredibly ambitious project that pushes the technological envelope with immersive true 4K gameplay, cloud-computing competitive multiplayer and a sprawling and futuristic open world.”
Certainly, a game that works at launch is better than a buggy or unfinished experience that leaves everyone miserable. People only have to think back to Batman: Arkham Knight’s PC problems as an example of a broken game that left everyone disappointed. No one wants a similar situation to happen with Crackdown 3.
But even so, this is frustrating for fans given that Crackdown 3 had already been delayed several times and at one point it was scheduled for a 2016 release. At one point, when the game was still set to launch this year, Reagent Games suggested that the game could even release before holiday 2017.
Moreover, Crackdown 3 was set to be one of the biggest games this holiday retail season that allow people to play as a person of colour or as a female protagonist. The fact that the Xbox One has just one major exclusive in holiday 2017 in the shape of Forza Motorsport 7 also isn’t being overlooked. Microsoft is hosting a presser at Gamescom 2017 next week though, and it will be interesting to see how the company restores fan faith following this disappointing delay.
Crackdown 3 will be released in spring 2018 on Windows 10 PC and Xbox One.
