GreedFall will include gay and lesbian romances, developer Spiders confirms. Set to be released next year, the game is an action RPG with a fantasy and 17th century theme.
GreedFall Lets Players Romance Their Companions
Writing on the game’s official forums, GreedFall project manager Marie-Cecile Jacq explains that players can customize a male or female character (including hair and skintone) and “develop your relationship with your five companions.” If players are “close enough to some of them you will be able to have a romance with them, which will of course include gay/lesbian romance.”
Jacq also explained that the companions will be from the different factions on the game’s island paradise, including settlers, invaders, mercenaries, treasure hunters and sailors. The developer added that “we’re really focusing on the narrative aspects, and important characters will all have their own stories, secrets, past, motivations giving them deep and interesting personalities.”
The player character (who is neutral to the events on the island) and their team of companions will work with or alongside the different factions in GreedFall and this should offer players plenty of time to get to know their teammates.
The confirmation that GreedFall offers same-sex romances has, unsurprisingly, been met with huge interest. After the Mass Effect Andromeda gay romance controversy, gay and lesbian players are eager more than ever to play a video game and support a developer that seems to understand the need and interest in proper representation.
As Spiders’ sci-fi RPG Technomancer got its gay romance right, many are hopeful that the developer will get it right again. As GreedFall isn’t out until next year, Spiders will still have to prove that but so far, so good.
GreedFall will be released in 2018 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
