Mulaka is officially coming to the Nintendo Switch, it has been announced. An action adventure game based on the indigenous culture of Tarahumara, Mulaka was confirmed for the Nintendo console with a brand new gameplay trailer.
Mulaka Announced for Nintendo Switch
Developed by Mexican indie developer Lienzo, Mulaka will be released on Nintendo Switch in 2018. The game sees players assume the role of Sukurúame, a shaman for the Tarahumara. Sukurúame will head out on a journey to “fight back the foulness corrupting the land,” with a little help from the demigods who will grant the character some powers.
Promising puzzles and environments inspired by real Sierra Tarahumara locations, Lienzo explains that the game is being developed with “renowned anthropologists and Tarahumara leaders to capture the true essence of the culture in the game.” The Mulaka developer also drew upon old and forgotten texts, myths, stories and recorded Rarámuri dialogue.
Moreover, Lienzo has financial and cultural backing from the Chihuahua Institute of Culture (ICHICULT) and the YOREME fund. Enrique Servín, a cultural expert who won the “Andrés Henestrosa” International Prize of Myth, Story and Legend, is also helping out.
While the game looks beautiful and intriguing based on these puzzle and battle gameplay snippets, the care that Lienzo is taking in portraying indigenous culture is the real draw. Where games like Killer Instinct have failed to portray Native people the first time around, Mulaka will hopefully get it right off the bat.
Like Never Alone, a platformer also based on indigenous culture, Mulaka can also teach players more about a culture unlike their own. Most people won’t have heard about the Tarahumara until they get their hands on the game, so hopefully Lienzo will manage to merge education and entertainment into one brilliant package.
Mulaka will be released in 2018 on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
