Uncharted: The Lost Legacy beats Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle in the latest UK sales chart. The PS4 exclusive, which features two female protagonists, was released last month to critical acclaim.
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is Number 1 for Another Week
In the UK games sales chart for last week, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy became the number one selling game for the second week in a row. Ukie explains that the game “narrowly” beat off Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, the Nintendo Switch exclusive which made its debut last week. Several other games in the top 10 also allowed feature playable female characters: Grand Theft Auto 5, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, Everybody’s Golf, ARK: Survival Evolved, and Overwatch.
Much of the praise heaped onto Uncharted: The Lost Legacy was because of the dynamic between its two protagonists and the fact that it was an interesting and different take on the Uncharted formula. On social media many female players in particular have voiced their interest in playing the game because it features characters that they can relate to in some sense. It’s hard to ignore that The Lost Legacy‘s success was at least in part because it stars two women of colour.
Recent studies suggested that female protagonists in games are important to everyone, and there’s the suggestion that female leads in typically male-led game genres (such as shooters) could increase sales. The performance of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy seems to confirm that theory in a major way.
Developer Naughty Dog has already suggested that Uncharted: The Lost Legacy could become its own spin-off and the stellar sales would provide more of an excuse to make that happen. So while there has been no confirmation yet, fingers crossed.
