A new game has been released as part of the growing conversation around same-sex marriage in Australia. Going Postal has launched ahead of the country’s postal vote on the matter later this month.
Going Postal is one of several titles offering a commentary on social issues, with Atari’s Pridefest featuring anti-gay protesters who pose as roadblocks during that game’s LGBTQ Pride parades.
Going Postal is a Light-Hearted Take on Australia’s Marriage Equality Vote
A brief browser game that’s available for free (here), Going Postal lets players control a postal ballot in the Australian same-sex marriage vote. By hitting the space bar, players must make the letter jump over rocks, over judges and over Australia’s former prime minister Tony Abbott who makes a cameo in a pair of Speedos.
The goal is to get the postal ballot to the post box at the end. Do so successfully and you’ll see a message from Agency (the firm that created the game) explaining that the vote is “the most important moment for marriage equality in Australia” and that Australians shouldn’t take this moment to vote ‘YES’ for granted. If players fail, then the game will remind you that “there are are more obstacles to equality than we thought.”
While Going Postal is short and offers upbeat retro music, its messaging is incredibly serious. Ballot papers regarding the matter will be sent out to Australian households from September 12, giving people a chance to have their say. But as the game stresses, the road to this point has not been easy and campaigners have been fighting hard for marriage equality since 2004.
“Australians, particularly young Australians, don’t send much snail mail any more, so we’re hoping this game helps people practice going postal before the big vote,” said Tim Middlemiss, Agency Sydney communications director, in a press release.
Agency is hoping that people share the game on social media to remind people to post their ballots. Getting the outcome of the vote will be a two-month process but hopefully Going Postal can help to ensure that marriage equality becomes a reality in Australia soon.
