Rockstar Games’ upcoming cowboy epic, Red Dead Redemption 2, is one of the most highly anticipated games of 2018. Most fans can’t wait to play the new game and see how Rockstar has made use of current generation consoles and what western hijinks await them.
But some fans are far more reserved and say that they can’t get excited until Rockstar has answered a key question: will Red Redemption 2 have a playable female character?
Red Dead Redemption 2 Female Protagonist Introduced in New Trailer?
The question of whether Red Dead Redemption 2 will let people play as a female character has been swirling since the game was announced in October 2016. Female cowboys and outlaws have oft been overlooked in media about the wild west but Rockstar’s new game could shine a spotlight on these women.
The biggest clue so far suggesting that the game will have a female protagonist is the latest Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer. At around 1:02 into the video embedded above, viewers can see a woman get into a heated argument with a man in a saloon, before she stabs his hand. In the scene that follows, the same woman can be seen explaining that “you’re the only of these fools that I trust”.

The official blurb for the trailer explains that Red Dead Redemption 2 will follow a man named Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang as they “rob, fight and steal their way across the vast and rugged heart of America in order to survive”. The woman in the trailer may well be a member of Van der Linde’s gang and she does seem to feature somewhat prominently in the trailer and will presumably be a big part of the game’s story. But will she actually be playable?
The trailer also suggests that Red Dead Redemption 2 will feature at least one train robbery and like in Grand Theft Auto 5, Rockstar’s other beloved sandbox game, there could be all sorts of heists too. If that is the case then there is the perfect opportunity to include this unnamed woman in these schemes, making her a playable character as players put the pieces of the robbery plan(s) in place.
Admittedly, as Rockstar has never made a game with a female lead, history isn’t on fans’ side. But now is as good a time as ever for the game development juggernaut to break that male streak.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Multiplayer to Borrow From Grand Theft Auto Online?
If Red Dead Redemption 2‘s single-player campaign doesn’t feature any playable female characters, then its multiplayer mode almost certainly will. The multiplayer mode in the first Red Dead Redemption did, as almost a dozen women were playable online and most of them were characters who had starred in that game’s story.
Rockstar has not revealed much information about multiplayer in its new game, other than confirming that PS4 players will have access to some online content before players on Xbox One. But the upcoming open-world game could borrow from Grand Theft Auto Online, the hugely successful multiplayer mode of Grand Theft Auto 5.
GTA 5‘s multiplayer allows players to create custom female characters to run around the world and go on crime sprees. Its story mode, however, does not feature any playable female protagonists. So it stands to reason that Red Dead Redemption 2 will follow in that game’s footsteps.
It’s not long now until the game will be released and so hopefully Rockstar will offer a definitive answer to the burning fan question ahead of launch.
Red Dead Redemption 2 will be released in early 2018 on PS4 and Xbox One.
