Marvel’s Spider-Man will feature Mary Jane Watson as a playable character, confirms developer Insomniac Games. The studio revealed the information alongside an impressive new trailer for the game at Paris Games Week 2017.
Marvel’s Spider-Man Has a Playable Female Character
In addition to Peter Parker, Marvel’s Spider-Man will also feature Mary Jane Watson as a playable character. In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Insomniac Games creative director Bryan Intihar explains that sometimes Spider-Man and Peter Parker’s worlds will collide.
“Mary Jane has a significant role here too,” explains Intihar. Mary Jane is described as “a smart, savvy reporter with The Daily Bugle and she’s investigating the suspicious activity happening throughout the city.” The female character will be playable during “key moments,” though it’s unclear exactly how many missions Mary Jane will be playable in.
What’s also unclear is whether Miles Morales, who was also Spider-Man in the Ultimate Spider-Man universes, will be playable too. This Paris Games Week trailer does feature the character quite a bit, as Peter introduces a young Miles to his Aunt Way so that he can volunteer at the shelter.
Insomniac Games has previously confirmed that Miles’ cameo in the game “means a lot,” seeming to suggest that he is at least an important character in the game. If Mary Jane is playable and can help Peter out by investigating, then perhaps Miles and his smartphone can aid those investigations too.
The stakes are high for Spidey in Marvel’s Spider-Man as the game’s main antagonist, Mister Negative (Martin Li) is a philanthropist and he is the one who owns the shelter that both Miles and Aunt May volunteer at. Judging by the trailer, the two character will find themselves in grave danger because of the connection and it will be up to Peter Parker’s Spider-Man to stop Mister Negative in his tracks.
Marvel’s Spider-Man will be released in 2018 exclusively on PS4.
