Firewatch developer Campo Santo reveals its next game during The Game Awards 2017. Called In the Valley of Gods, the game stars two black, female protagonists and its art style looks absolutely phenomenal.
The game was not the only female-led project to be announced during the event. Nintendo and PlatinumGames also confirmed that Bayonetta 3 is in development.
In the Valley of Gods Gets Black Female Hair Right
In the Valley of Gods is described as a single-player first-person adventure that’s set in 1920s Egypt. Players become a “disgraced former explorer” named Rashida as she is given “one last shot at the adventurous life you desperately miss.” But the game’s female protagonist is not alone as she is joined by Zora, “the former partner you vowed never to work with again.”
The two will explore the deserts of Egypt, searching in the “endless miles of dunes, ruins, and tombs” to make an “incredible archaeological discovery.” While the nature of that discovery is being kept under wraps for now, the trailer sees Rashida and Zora line up the camera for an absolutely beautiful shot of the sun rising over the ruins, forming a stunning image of an Egyptian god.
Also, all you ladies with naturally kinky 4b/4c hair, I see you. Your hair is beautiful and I have been trying hard to capture that beauty in Zora's hair. I don't think we're there yet but we'll keep trying til we have to ship <3 pic.twitter.com/TEXxwyXx17

And, speaking of things that look beautiful, doesn’t In the Valley of Gods look wonderful? While Firewatch showed off Campo Santo’s artistic talent, it seems as though the developer has improved its skills even more for its next game. Its recreation of Egypt just looks gorgeous and it’s no wonder why so many viewers of The Game Awards said that they are desperate to play the game after watching the announcement trailer.
The attention to detail extends to its characters as well, specifically with the two women’s hair. So few games depict black hair correctly and with all of our curls and the volume, many developers cut corners. But not Campo Santo. The hair in the game looks great so far but on Twitter, lead artist Jane Ng insisted that it’s a work in progress and that the team will continue to work on it to make it even better before the game is released.
Games with dual female leads are few and far between (Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is one other example) and that makes In the Valley of Gods exciting too. The fact that both women are black, that the game looks so beautiful, and that Campo Santo is behind it too is only going to make the wait for this game even harder.
In the Valley of Gods is aiming to release in 2019 for Windows PC, Mac, and Linux. Other platforms have yet to be determined.
