2K Games is criticized over the portrayal of a First Nation chief in Civilization 6: Rise and Fall. Poundmaker Cree Nation Headman Milton Tootoosis says that the way that Chief Poundmaker is included in the game is at odds with Cree Nation values.
This is not the first time that Civilization 6 has caused controversy. The announcement of Queen Seondeok was also met with some backlash from players.
Civilization 6 Team Didn’t Consult the Cree Nation About Chief Poundmaker
Civilization 6: Rise and Fall is set to include Chief Poundmaker (Pîhtokahanapiwiyin) as the leader of the Cree Nation. Poundmaker was a greatly respected leader in the 19th century, working to establish peace between Canada and the Cree Nation. In the game, Poundmaker has skills that give players advantages for establishing and maintinaing trade routes.
Civilization 6 allows players to battle for world domination including waging war against opponents. But this is at odds with the Cree Nation’s culture, says Poundmaker Cree Nation Headman Milton Tootoosis in an interview with CBC Radio’s Saskatoon Morning.
“It perpetuates this myth that First Nations had similar values that the colonial culture has, and that is one of conquering other peoples and accessing their land. That is totally not in concert with our traditional ways and world view.
It’s a little dangerous for a company to perpetuate that ideology that is at odds with what we know. [Chief Poundmaker] was certainly not in the same frame of mind as the colonial powers.”
Tootoosis also reveals that 2K Games, the publisher behind Civilization 6: Rise and Fall, did not consult with the Cree Nation about the leader’s inclusion in the game. 2K should have formally spoken to the Cree Nation to get feedback on how Chief Poundmaker is portrayed.
Though, the Poundmaker Cree Nation Headman does note that Chief Poundmaker’s portrayal isn’t entirely negative. The game could negatively or positively impact the Cree Nation’s current efforts to have Poundmaker’s wrongful treason conviction overturned. “I certainly hope it helps more than it hurts the cause,” says Tootoosis.
