The Sims 4 introduces several new skin tones and hairstyles as part of its anniversary update. The update, which is being released to celebrate 18 years of The Sims series, also includes new clothes for your Sims to wear.
The Sims 4 on PS4 and Xbox One also gets an update and a new DLC pack for the console versions of the game is released.
The Sims 4 Adds More Options for Black and Brown Sims
The latest update for the PC and Mac version of The Sims 4 (PC Version 126.96.36.1990 / Mac Version 188.8.131.520) is now available for free and introduces 10 new skin tones and an anniversary t-shirt. These new skin tones allow players to create a greater variety of darker skinned Sims and include “cool and warm undertones.”
Additionally, The Sims 4 players on PC and Mac have access to a brand new hairstyle that gives Sims a full head of curls. Both male and female Sims can use this hairstyle (The Sims 4 team got rid of Create A Sim gender restrictions several years ago). Although The Sims 4 has been praised for its improved Create a Sim gameplay, fans have long argued that it lacks the options to create realistic characters of color. It seems that the new skin tones and the new, almost afro-like hairstyle have been introduced to remedy that.
However, as noted by Kotaku‘s Gita Jackson, there is still a lot of work to be done. The undertones described in the patch notes seem to be bugged and give darker Sims odd, differently-colored patches of skin. Make-up also results in an outline.
Moreover, that new curly hairstyle doesn’t quite reflect the tight curls or the texture of an afro (as someone with an afro, I can also attest to this). It’s clear that The Sims 4 team wants to be inclusive of Black and brown players (the holiday celebration pack update also showed this) but it hasn’t gotten it all right just yet.
The Sims 4 Romantic Garden Stuff Released on PS4 and Xbox One
The Sims 4 players on PS4 and Xbox One have also received a new update this week, along with access to some more premium DLC. The latest patch for the console version of the game allows the player to freely rotate objects and the game will no longer ask a character’s age when switching from adult vampire to toddler in Create a Sim.
The new DLC, meanwhile, is The Sims 4 Romantic Garden Stuff pack. Arriving just in time for Valentine’s Day, this new DLC adds various floral-themed fashion options, items to create Victorian gardens (e.g new flowers and fountains), a fountain that Sims can splash about in, and a magical wishing well that wouldn’t be out of place in the (rumored) witches and wizards expansion pack.
The Sims 4 Romantic Garden Stuff pack was first released on PC and Mac in February 2016. So while The Sims 4 players on PS4 and Xbox One are still a long way away from having access to all of the DLC that has been released for PC and Mac so far, the development team does seem to be progressing through the list at pace. Hopefully it won’t be too long now until The Sims 4 Cats and Dogs is released on consoles too.
